Congaree Riverkeeper works to protect and improve water quality, wildlife habitat, and recreation on the Broad, Lower Saluda, and Congaree Rivers. They celebrated their 15th anniversary with a unique mark that we incorporated into a beer can design, poster design and additional merch. The poster illustration is inspired directly from the Columbia area rivers and the mark includes different river-related elements.

The Main Street District reached out about updating the look and feel of its existing brand. They wanted something that better reflected the things everyone loves about the district; great art, food, nightlife, shopping, etc.

Through an updated color palette, expansion of typefaces, textures, patterns and new iconography I aimed to inject more excitement and expression while also being inviting and inclusive.

I got the opportunity to collaborate with the South Carolina Education Lottery celebrating its 20th anniversary on five original designs for scratch-off tickets.

The reimagined $5 dollar scratch-offs show Columbia’s Gervais Street Bridge along with Greenville’s Riverwalk, Charleston’s Rainbow Row, Aiken’s South Boundary Avenue of Oaks, and Myrtle Beach’s Boardwalk.

While adhering to a few regulations, I was able to customize a lot of the little details to make these extra unique.

The Five Points Association reached out about updating the wraps on their electrical boxes around the neighborhood and I jumped at the chance to be a part of the project. Starting from the existing brand, I updated the colors and graphics to a more exciting palette.

From there we created a series of five illustrations that included various elements of the Five Points neighborhood and updated some light pole banners to carry the theme throughout as well.

Sally Salamander is a walking tour of downtown Columbia featuring numbered, bronze statues of South Carolina's state amphibian, the spotted salamander. The tour was presented by the Leadership Columbia class of 2009 and since then, management has been taken over by Experience Columbia.

I got to work with them on a brand refresh for Sally. We created a fresh new brand identity including a family of logos, icons and an illustrated version of Sally to be used for web, print, and merch.

I usually come up with a few different concepts for the Fair to consider for the upcoming year’s theme. I stewed a while, but when this one hit me, I got a little obsessed. I HAD to see it carried through. Flock and Rally had my back all the way.

We really wanted to contrast much of what was done in years prior by simplifying it all down to a simple message and graphic. This was a little outside the client’s comfort zone as they typically like to show all of the fun aspects of the Fair. Once we started in on the “moments” it was difficult to stop. In total, 18 moments were created, 16 officially saw the light of day.

The idea was to communicate that the SC State Fair is a whole experience (sights, smells, sounds, tastes) By using crops and closeups of imagery with no other background details, the intention was to let imagination come into play to fill in the blanks and transport the viewer to that moment.

Since the 2021 SC State Fair theming was actually developed for 2020, I was a little worried when it did roll out, thinking maybe the concept went stale while it was in hibernation for a year. But I think the opposite happened and it was actually MORE impactful than it would’ve been originally. When everyone had been away from a real fair experience, they really could have their moment when it came back.

I was honored when asked to help create the identity for the National Parks’ Reconstruction Era National Historic Network and had no idea it would be one of the most creatively challenging and fulfilling projects of 2021. I had the opportunity to work with an extremely knowledgeable group of individuals and this is the concept that was chosen among them and their colleagues.

I wanted this design to speak to the entangled history of the time, a bit jagged but still some semblance of organization. Putting together materials that came from different places to make something new. Building something up. The unfinished edges represent how the same ideas are things we're still working on today. Pops of color in the woven piece represent different dark and light aspects of the time; labor & economics, freedom, religion, education, citizenship, pride, community, rebirth, turmoil, violence, oppression.

An incredible opportunity to create my first large scale, outdoor mural in 2019 came along and I jumped on it. The Congaree Vista Guild in Columbia, SC commissioned me to paint a mural that encompasses the feeling of the Vista area.

The concept behind Lady Vista is that her “hair” contains several different patterns which represent things about the Vista area and its history (music, lights, energy, railroad, textiles, art).

This was one of the most challenging and fulfilling things I’ve ever done, but what I love most of all is the public response to it, which has been extremely positive. I can’t wait to do another one!

I had the honor of helping with the 2020 branding for Walk for Life & the Famously Hot Pink Half Marathon. It was the 30th anniversary for Walk for Life, so I wanted to come up with a creative way to express that. I decided to throw it back to whatever was popular 30 years ago and chose the Walkman to represent that time period, which was especially appropriate because it already involved walking! Part of the task was a sticker design for people to write the name of the person who they’re walking for, so how could I not do a cassette tape?!

This year, the foundation also wanted to separate the identity of the Famously Hot Pink Half Marathon, so I went with some shoes and a fun way to integrate the lettering.

I had the best time working with the City of Columbia and One Columbia to paint the newest “parklet” installed at the corner of Hampton and Main (a sidewalk extension that provides more space and amenities for people using the street). I got to meet a lot of interesting people and felt extremely welcome while working.

I took certain elements of the Main Street District and represented them in a sometimes abstract, sometimes more literal, and always colorful way.

The Babcock is a luxury apartment complex housed in one of Columbia's most iconic buildings. Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1981, the building was the second to house patients on the campus of South Carolina State Hospital in 1885.

Flock and Rally and Clachan Properties asked me to help with branding the complex. One of the last remaining signs on the building were letters that spelled “BABCOCK” on the front facade high above the entry stairway. After exploring several concepts, and taking cues from the space itself, we decided to go back to those letters. I went up in a lift to take a rubbing of each letter to get its individual characteristics, cleaned those up, and created the Babcock logo as you see it.

Considering The Babcock building’s history and stories — through the good and bad — I’m glad we went back to something original rather than slapping a new brand on such an old building.

The YMCA in downtown Columbia, SC finally decided to move into a new building after they had been in the same spot for over 100 years. We were asked to help out with signage, branding and environmental graphics.

Coming up with a theme was a little bit of a no-brainer. We decided the new facility should be a salute to the original by incorporating elements of YMCA's history in Columbia as well as a focus on the city itself, while also connecting the main values of the YMCA and giving it all a bold, modern twist.

Some of the main features are a large scale map of metropolitan Columbia with running routes, a history wall detailing some of the facts, figures and photos of YMCA's presence in Columbia, and room graphics which incorporate imagery of exercise with landmarks of Columbia.

Collaborated with Flock and Rally on a full rebrand for Building Families, a local law firm specializing in full-service adoption agency and surrogacy services. We created a full logo family and branded collaterals to go along with it. They trusted us to go the route less traveled and NOT look like every other law firm.

I wanted a hand-drawn feel to the lettering, but not look childish. I also thought it was important to have a colorful, uplifting color palette since women’s empowerment was a big theme for them.

I really enjoyed working with both HLJ Creative and Yachtail to help develop their branding & identity, as well as design the packaging, website and other collaterals.

The folks at Yachtail gave me a lot of great information off the bat to work from; things they liked and didn’t like, some inspiration and their story. They wanted a “yacht-rock” meets “vintage travel poster” inspired look and feel. Some of the original concepts can be found in the bottom image.

I wanted the brand to stand out from a lot of other canned cocktails and hard seltzers. It was also important that the design didn’t look too feminine, that a man wouldn’t feel like he was having a “girly drink”.

Worked with Flock & Rally and the SC African American Heritage Commission on the design of a mobile web-based app to guide tourists to more than 300 historically significant African-American sites in South Carolina.

The app features detailed listings of each site with descriptions, images, categories and map points, designed with the mobile smartphone or tablet user in mind.

The task of creating the logo & branding for The Green Book of SC actually seemed a little daunting after our first brainstorming session, but I found that really listening to each team member's thoughts made things a lot easier. 

The logo is inspired by the "Palmetto Tree" so well known around South Carolina and is representative of the state, while a "kente cloth" treatment ties in the African American aspect of the brand.

The aim for the app was to keep things pretty simple and easy to read and use, while allowing the brand to still have its voice.
