Do Good Columbia is a two-day community problem-solving workshop led by Richland Library that uses human-centered design techniques to develop creative solutions to community problems. In its inaugural year, which took place Friday, September 15 and Saturday, September 16, 2017. Do Good focused on increasing access to, usage and enjoyment of, our rivers.

Flock and Rally brought me on to help with branding and identity, and this year's event materials which included a website, welcome packet mailed to each participant and advisor, poster, tee shirts, signage and other give-away items like a beer glass, tote bag and coffee mug.

The team from Richland Library wanted a lot of emphasis on human-centered design, a handmade feel, a brand that looked modern and clean, and easily adaptable for future year's themes, which could range from how to make our rivers more fun and accessible to helping establish a place for the homeless.

The YMCA in downtown Columbia, SC finally decided to move into a new building after they had been in the same spot for over 100 years. We were asked to help out with signage, branding and environmental graphics.

Coming up with a theme was a little bit of a no-brainer. We decided the new facility should be a salute to the original by incorporating elements of YMCA's history in Columbia as well as a focus on the city itself, while also connecting the main values of the YMCA and giving it all a bold, modern twist.

Some of the main features are a large scale map of metropolitan Columbia with running routes, a history wall detailing some of the facts, figures and photos of YMCA's presence in Columbia, and room graphics which incorporate imagery of exercise with landmarks of Columbia.

Worked with Flock & Rally and the SC State Museum / City of Columbia on a really fun project for the Total Eclipse Weekend in Columbia, SC on August 18-21, 2017.

We developed a brand to exist as the "headquarters" for all eclipse related events and information in Columbia, including a logo, brand guide, website, marketing poster & rack card, sponsor guide, eclipse glasses, advertising and more.

Worked with the local integrated communications firm, Flock and Rally for the 7th annual indie craft fair, Crafty Feast, in Columbia, SC.

It was a super fun project because there was almost total creative freedom for this year's brand concept.

I wanted to do something that would be relevant, quirky and could be expanded upon for future years. I drew all of the illustrations, and made sure to create them in a way where they could be moved around and resized. I also was given the opportunity to tweak the logo, so I freshened up the colors / textures, but maintained the overall layout that had been used for years prior. 

Designs included posters, advertising, banners, letterhead and business cards, sticker sheets, photo booth props, etc.

The Story Shack is an online literary magazine featuring illustrated flash fiction.

Columbia, SC //  August 2017

Worked with Flock & Rally and the SC African American Heritage Commission on the design of a mobile web-based app to guide tourists to more than 300 historically significant African-American sites in South Carolina.

The app features detailed listings of each site with descriptions, images, categories and map points, designed with the mobile smartphone or tablet user in mind.

The task of creating the logo & branding for The Green Book of SC actually seemed a little daunting after our first brainstorming session, but I found that really listening to each team member's thoughts made things a lot easier. 

The logo is inspired by the "Palmetto Tree" so well known around South Carolina and is representative of the state, while a "kente cloth" treatment ties in the African American aspect of the brand.

The aim for the app was to keep things pretty simple and easy to read and use, while allowing the brand to still have its voice.

I have worked closely with Flock & Rally on the 2016 & 2015 Famously Hot New Year marketing materials. In 2015, we wanted to give the event a whole new look & feel while trying to stay within budget constraints.

My job became a little easier when Ms. Lauryn Hill was signed as the headliner, even though she had few photos to work with and the one that was chosen became a little bit of a challenge later on.

The campaign was awarded a Mercury Award in Integrated Campaigns from the SC Public Relations Society of America.

For 2016, Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue headlined. Shorty had few decent photos to use as well, so we went with more of an "illustrated band poster" feel, while keeping some of the design elements from the prior year (like the stripes and bokeh).

I was recently commissioned by TD Bank to create some large format botanical illustrations as part of an interior renovation concept developed by Gensler.

The illustrations were created specifically for the Centrepark West location in West Palm Beach, FL and are all based on road names in the area (which also happen to be plant names).

There is also a series of three images in the break room area illustrating three different "landmarks" of the West Palm Beach area.

There were some challenges in creating the artwork so it would interpret well at a large scale, but we worked it out and I'm very happy with the end results.

Columbia Open Studios is an annual event where people visit local artists' studios. 2016 was the third year I've had the privilege of working with Flock and Rally and 701 CCA on this campaign.

This is a particularly fun job for me because there's a lot of creative freedom.

While the logo for the event remains the same (in general), we develop new materials for the artist guide, maps, posters, postcards, event tickets, rack cards, and web graphics.

Southern Community Services is a local homeowner's association management company who was looking for a brand refresh.

We went through an entire logo development process and wound up with one that looked pretty similar, but more sophisticated, than their old logo.

They also needed brand solutions to complete the look. We developed the website, a brand guide, print advertisements, newsletters, business cards, letterhead, envelopes, etc.

Charleston A to Z is a children's picture book by author Rob Hicks. There are 26 full color illustrations plus the front and back covers. 

The book is unique in that it has a short rhyme for younger readers, as well as more detailed text pertaining to the history of each subject.

Eduardo's was a personal piece I did after experiencing the best shrimp tacos that came from a guy in a truck ever while I was in the Outer Banks of NC.

Then Eduardo's was accepted into the Artfields 2016 exhbition in Lake City, SC.

Shortly after that Eduardo was selected for the Archive of American Illustration 35.

And lastly Collective Arts Brewing accepted him for their Series 6 beer labels!

Eduardo is the man.

Landy's Neighborhood Pharmacy is a local independent retail and compounding pharmacy in Northeast Columbia. They came to me to develop a logo, brand identity, advertising, marketing collateral, a website, signage, store graphics and more. 

I continue to work with them as new needs arise.

The Man with the Master Van started out as a personal piece I wanted to do, inspired by a man in the grocery store parking lot.

Soon after, TMWTMV was accepted into Artfields, a juried exhibition that takes place in Lake City, SC in May 2013.

About a year later, it was also accepted into Collective Arts Brewing Series 3, where TMWTMV was printed on beer labels in Canada for the entire year. 

PGA Junior League Golf was just starting out when they asked for consultation on their new logo & approach.

Soon after, I was hired on to design all of their branded materials, including advertising, singage & banners, handbooks, scorecards, polo shirts, bag tags, forms, brochures and sales materials, etc.

The Snow Kingdom is a three book series for young readers by D.L. Fox. I was asked to illustrate each chapter's interior spot (black and white) as well as the full color covers.

Cluck-N-Scoot is a personal piece I decided to do after two different client projects. One involved chickens and the other involved a rejected concept with a vespa involved. Its always nice when client work inspires you. 

Scoot was accepted into the Collective Arts Brewing Series 7 beer labels, which I'm very excited about. It will be my third label with them.
